Chatham Emergency Squad’s Novak Receives EMT Excellence Award During EMS Week: ‘We Care. For Everyone’

EMS Week kicked off May 18th with the theme “We Care. For Everyone.” EMS (Emergency Medical Services) Week is an annual week-long recognition of the role of EMS by the American College of Emergency Physicians and the National Association of EMTs (NAEMT).

This year’s theme emphasizes the dedication and compassion of emergency medical services (EMS) professionals who provide care to all individuals in their communities, regardless of their circumstances.

Chatham Emergency Squad President Nicole DiMaggio was present at the April 28th Chatham Borough Council Meeting to represent CES when the proclamation recognizing Frontline Workers Appreciation Month was announced. At the May 12th meeting, Mayor Carolyn Dempsey passed a resolution recognizing the week of May 18th as EMS Week.

In keeping with EMS recognition, CES is proud to announce that Sue Novak has been selected as the recipient of the 2025 EMT Excellence Award. In announcing Sue’s recognition, President DiMaggio noted her “unrelenting dedication to the squad” and quoted just a few of the reasons members cited in their nomination including her skills, compassion, and ability to help patients relax, even in the most stressful situation.

Additionally, members noted her unwavering coverage of Wednesday nights, her tireless commitment as Oxygen Manager, and her mentorship to fellow members. In summary, Sue was recognized as “a steadfast pillar of our squad and an exceptional EMT.” The EMT Excellence Award is a program sponsored by Overlook Medical Center.

Throughout EMS Week, residents will see lawn signs recognizing CES volunteers. Although national trends show a downward trend in volunteer emergency squads’ ability to recruit, staffing at CES is near its strongest level in recent history. CES is always interested in speaking to potential volunteers.

The Chatham Emergency Squad never charges for its services; most of its annual expenses are paid for by donations from the community. CES’s Annual Fund drive kicked off last month with a mailer sent to every home.

In addition to providing Basic Life Support (BLS) service 24/7, 365/days/year, CES provides stand-by support for community events, such as the Chatham Turkey Trot, the Fishawack Festival, and school sports events. CES also hosts blood drives and provides free CPR training to residents, teachers, coaches, school crossing guards and emergency personnel, including fire and police.
